Rice Planting & Ena gorge walk

In Japan, rice is a staple food and we all eat it very often but it’s rare that you get to sow and understand the process of what you eat almost every day.

On May 12th, our students (exchange from both undergraduate and graduate level, regular international and Japanese) went to Ena city in Gifu prefecture, renowned for its agricultural lands, particularly its rice fields, in order to take part in the rice planting activity, after which they enjoyed a walk around Ena gorge.

Nowadays, farmers use tractors and machines to plant and harvest the rice. But with the kind cooperation of the local farmers, students were able to plant the rice the traditional way, with their own hands and bare feet in the muddy field. Just before, they received a lecture from the farmers on how to plant the rice seeds properly.

Famished after this experience, everyone was able to ravish themselves with a truly delicious Japanese curry with rice harvested just the semester before by our students as well.
