During Professor Yuji Ono’s seminar, the students give presentations which will become the topic of subsequent discussions. They also work hard on case writing – the culmination of their studies at our University.

What is case writing? It is the graduation assignment in Nagoya Campus and takes approximately 2 years to complete. On the contrary to classic dissertation, it requires a subjective approach towards the company you are researching. See more here.

Take up interesting news as a topic

Today, the class started with one student presenting his take on news he found interesting, which quickly followed by a discussion about it. To be specific, he chose to talk about online classes – while obviously they are held at our University, a demand for this type of learning is rapidly increasing worldwide. The subsequent debate focused on merits and demerits such classes present. The students were eager to share their feelings and voiced the following opinions:

▼Pros
・Commuting to school became less stressful
・No transportation costs
・Depending on the topic of a lesson, sometimes it is easier to focus than during standard classes
▼Cons
・It’s hard to give a presentation
・You are unable to keep focus for a few hours straight

Our University did not stop at uploading one-sided “video on demand”, but instead decided to invest into a platform which enables simultaneous live transmission between teachers and students. This way, all participants can speak out freely anytime. As Professor Ono said, “Even though online classes bring about a set of unique problems, our University is praised for providing such high-quality lessons. Let’s improve them even further together – we, the teachers, are striving to perfect them by various means, such as giving an ear to our students’ opinions”.

About case writing

After that the class moved to the topic of case writing. Today, it was senior students who took part in a discussion on their cases in order to correct mistakes and improve the quality of their works. Professor Ono gave a few pieces of advice as well, i.e. “It is vital to decide on the composition of your case before you even start writing – create headlines and subtitles first”, or “Do not focus only on the company of your interest – adding information about its competitors will make your work even better”. By discussing cases once by one with other classmates, our students can incorporate differing opinions into their works. We can surely expect them to submit in-depth, subjective and well-written cases in a few months.
