A career guidance session was held last month for the 3rd year students. The students received important information on how they should prepare themselves for their job hunting as it will begin next year in March upon entering their 4th year.
Although the choices of industries and jobs differ for each student, everyone should be prepared for job hunting and make the best out of the available opportunities because the job market is highly competitive.

Why is the period before job hunting so important?

You should look at the bigger picture, it is not just the beginning of the job hunting process that is crucial. It starts even earlier with everything you do in order to prepare yourself including the academic and professional experiences, building and honing the necessary skills and to find clarity in your choices and career path.

Think about it this way, for a flight to take off, it needs to accelerate along the runway first, collecting sufficient speed and lift before finally taking off and soaring into the sky. Along the same lines, students have to prepare themselves over the years, building up their profiles and then start job hunting before finally engaging on their new adventures with their first jobs.

Because the market is so competitive and companies are also setting higher standards, you should take the time to prepare yourself so that you can have an edge over other candidates.

This preparation comes in various forms and below are just some examples:
• Gain knowledge through classes
• Obtain expertise to reach the desired industry and job
• Professional experiences (internships & part-time jobs)
• Differentiate yourself by participating in international programs
• Self-reflection to find clarity in your choices
• Learn from people currently employed in your desired job

During the first half of the 3rd year, the students will be researching about the industries and jobs that interest them the most. In the second half of the same year, they will move onto finding companies in these industries, particularly those that fascinate them. And finally, the job hunting starts in their 4th year, from March.
